Professor Shivdas Nanaware, former Professor and Head, Department of Zoology, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, passed his B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. in Zoology with first class Honours. Later he obtained his Ph.D. on Physiology of Reproduction in Gastropod Molluscs from Shivaji University in 1975 under the guidance of Prof. A.T. Varute, Ex. Vice-Chancellor of this University. Prof. Nanaware comes from a farmer family of famenstican village Kuroli-Siddheshwar of Khatav Taluka in Satara district of Maharashtra and has completed his education with all the odds with the help of Laximibai Patil Trust of RayatShikshan Sanstha, Satara. Dr. Nanaware started his teaching career in Department of Zoology, Yashavantrao Chavan College, Khatav and later joined ‘RayatShikshan Sanstha’, Satara. After serving in its two colleges, Science College, Sataraand S.G.M. College, Karad, he joined the Post-Graduate Department of Zoology, Shivaji University in 1969. After serving as a Lecturer and Reader, he became permanent Professor in the same Department in 1996 and then Head of the Department in 2001.

Dr. Nanaware has a unique combination of rich scientific research and science administration experience and is actively involved in science awareness and popularization programmes of pure and applied Zoology and Environmental Science since his college life. He is internationally well connected and has been a Research Scientist, Professor and Visiting Professor at a number of universities and institutions. He has completed several research projects sponsored by UGC and ICMR. He has produced 20 Ph.D. and M.Phil. students and has published more than 60 research papers in journals of national and international repute. He has delivered number of invited lectures in different universities and institutes throughout the world. He has written some chapters in books and review articles. He is a member of editorial boards of many journals of Zoology and Environmental Science. He has attended several national and international seminars in India and abroad.

Prof. Nanaware is a life member of many professional societies including UnitasMalacologia, The Netherlands, Indian Society for Comparative Animal Physiology (ISCAP), Tirupati, Indian Academy of Environmental Science, Haridwar, Academy of Environmental Biology, Lucknow, Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Calcutta, Marathi Vidnan Parishad, Mumbai. Besides, he was the Vice-Chairman and Executive Committee Member of ISCA (1991-92), Calcutta, member of Indian Photobiology Association, Kolhapur Chapter, Calcutta and a member and Secretary of Executive Committee of Shivaji University P.G. Teachers’ Association (SUPTA), Kolhapur.

Prof. Nanaware has received several awards/honours in recognition of his meritorious research works. Some of which are Best Teacher Award 2003, Govt. of Maharashtra, Best University P.G. Teacher, 2003, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Gold Medal Award 2004 by Academy of Environmental Biology, Lucknow. He has also admitted fellow of Academy of Environmental Biology (F.A.E.B.), Lucknow and Indian Academy of Environmental Science (F.I.A.E.S.), Haridwar, Governor of Maharashtra has nominated him as Governor’s nominee on Academic Council of Sant Gadage Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur. He is Vice-Chancellor’s nominee on the R.R. Committee, Zoology of Mumbai University, Mumbai.
